Climate change creates not only environmental challenges in cities but also inequalities that affect different social groups in different ways. To address these issues, we became a partner in Urban Precipices, an Erasmus+ project coordinated by Reyhanlı Ticaret ve Sanayi Odası. Bringing together organizations from Bulgaria, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Spain, and Türkiye, the project aims to strengthen cooperation and develop a shared approach to environmental justice and sustainable urban development.

🌡️ The Social Impact of Rising Urban Temperatures

The urban heat island effect occurs when densely built-up areas with limited green spaces become warmer than their surrounding areas. However, the consequences of this phenomenon are not experienced equally by everyone. People with limited financial resources, older people, people with disabilities, and migrants may face greater challenges in coping with extreme heat.

The Urban Precipices project seeks to highlight these inequalities and emphasize the importance of social justice in addressing climate change. Through the project, participants are encouraged to better understand the social dimensions of environmental challenges and develop a more informed perspective on climate justice. 🌱

🏙️ Empowering Young People to Drive Environmental Change

One of the project's key priorities is to strengthen the knowledge and skills of young people and youth workers in promoting sustainable cities. Particular attention is given to young people with fewer opportunities, encouraging them to engage actively in environmental issues, express their views, and contribute to solution-oriented initiatives within their local communities.

Inclusive urban planning, environmentally friendly practices, and approaches to reducing the impacts of climate change are among the project's main areas of focus. Supporting the professional development of youth workers is also intended to contribute to higher-quality activities in environmental justice and inclusive youth work. 🌿

🌐 Building a Sustainable Future Through International Exchange

With partners from six countries, Urban Precipices creates opportunities to learn from different community experiences and explore environmental solutions that respond to local needs. Knowledge sharing and cooperation between partner organizations are expected to help extend the project's approaches to wider audiences and generate long-term benefits.

Urban Precipices emphasizes that sustainable cities must be socially fair as well as environmentally responsible. Through this partnership, the project aims to increase environmental awareness, strengthen youth participation, and promote inclusive responses to the climate crisis. Creating more liveable cities requires an approach that recognizes and addresses the needs of all members of society. 💚
